You take your antihistamine. Your allergy symptoms are under control. And yet, your eyes are:
\u2022\tred
\u2022\tdry or irritated
\u2022\ttired
\u2022\tsometimes watering and sometimes feeling tight or \u201cgritty\u201d
If this sounds familiar, you\u2019re not imagining it. And you\u2019re not doing anything wrong.<\/p>

What is Antihistamine-Induced Dry Eye?\n(Dry eye caused by antihistamines)?<\/b><\/h3>

Antihistamine-induced dry eye is a form of dry eye disease that:<\/p>

\u2022\tappears, or
\u2022\tworsens
in people who take antihistamines for long periods of time.
It does not mean that:
\u2022the medication is \u201cbad\u201d
\u2022your treatment is failing<\/p>


It means that while antihistamines control allergic inflammation, they can disrupt the eye\u2019s natural lubrication system.<\/b><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t

Why can antihistamines affect the eyes?<\/b><\/h3>

Antihistamines block H1 histamine receptors. These receptors are not found only in the nose or lungs, but also in:
\u2022the lacrimal (tear) glands
\u2022the eyelids
\u2022the meibomian glands
\u2022the ocular surface
Studies show that antihistamines may:
\u2022\treduce tear production
\u2022increase tear evaporation
\u2022impair eyelid function
\u2022destabilize the tear film<\/p>

That is why eye symptoms may worsen even as allergy symptoms improve.<\/b><\/p>

\u201cI don\u2019t have dry eye \u2013 my eyes are watering\u201d
This is one of the most common misunderstandings. Many patients with antihistamine dry eye experience:
\u2022 tearing
\u2022\tsensitivity to wind or air conditioning
\u2022tearing while driving or using screens
This is called paradoxical tearing.\nTears are present, but they are poor quality and evaporate quickly.\nThe eye overreacts, but remains inadequately protected.<\/p>

It\u2019s not about \u201cnot having enough tears\u201d<\/b><\/h3>

According to the international scientific consensus TFOS DEWS II: The most common cause of eye redness and discomfort is not lack of tears, but evaporative dry eye.
In other words:
\u2022tears are present
\u2022but they do not last

The root of the problem: the eyelids<\/b><\/h3>

Eyelids are not simply \u201cskin around the eye.\u201d<\/p>

\u2022they host the Meibomian glands
\u2022produce the lipid layer of the tear film
\u2022regulate tear film stability
\u2022protect the eye with every blink<\/p>

When eyelid function is impaired:<\/b>
\u2022tears evaporate faster<\/p>

\u2022blood vessels dilate<\/p>

\u2022eyes become red, tired, and uncomfortable<\/p>

Why artificial tears are often not enough<\/b><\/h3>

Artificial tears:
\u2022provide temporary hydration
\u2022offer short-term relief

However:
\u2022they do not clean the eyelids
\u2022they do not improve gland function
\u2022they do not restore lipid balance
