Why It’s Time to Introduce an “Eye Hygiene Curriculum” in Schools
The Paradox of Education
In schools, children learn to brush their teeth, wash their hands, exercise, and eat properly.
But they are never taught how to care for their eyes – the organ that provides 80% of the information about the world around them.
Screens & Children – The New Daily Reality
Learning, entertainment, and even social life now pass through screens.
Key Data:
- 60% of children in Europe use a smartphone or tablet for more than 3 hours per day.
- The World Health Organization warns: rates of myopia have doubled in the past 20 years.
- Studies show that prolonged screen use leads to Dry eye, blepharitis and fatigue even in elementary school children.
The Missing Education
Why does no child ever learn that::
- eyelids must be cleaned daily,
- rubbing the eyes causes inflammation,
- ότι proper hygiene prevents dry eye and infections?;
Ocular hygiene is absent from every school curriculum.
The Consequences
This neglect leads to::
- Early-onset myopia and dependence on glasses.
- Dry eye that reduces focus and reading performance.
- Allergies and blepharitis that make children avoid activities.
- Lower self-confidence due to red eyes or dark circles.
In reality, we are raising children with “aged eyes” from elementary school.
The Proposal – An “Eye Hygiene Curriculum”
Just as oral hygiene has a place in schools, so should eye hygiene:
- Teaching children simple eyelid cleansing routines.
- Educating on the 20-20-20 screen break rule.
- Advising teenagers on safe contact lens use and avoiding eye rubbing.
Promoting Dermophthalmology as a modern approach.
Conclusion – A New Lesson for Life
Greece, which gave the world Hippocrates and the philosophy of prevention,can lead once again.By including eye hygiene in schools, we won’t just raise children with better vision.We will raise a new generation more focused, healthier, and ready to support society.
Just as we say for teeth: “a healthy smile is a sign of health”,we must also say for the eyes: “a clean, bright gaze is a sign of wellness and future.”
